What to do when your Mac Freezes on Login Screen & does not start?

A computer that does not start up is a big problem for many users, even with Mac it is likely to happen that a system does not start up (properly) anymore. After all, even human beings can break down, not to mention the machines. In this article, we have outlined solutions to fix Mac Login Screen issues or errors.

So, what are the steps you need to take when you cannot login to Mac? Below are some possible solutions for you, let’s check!

Solutions to fix Mac stuck on login screen

1. Bypass login items

When you turn on your Mac, you’ll be asked to enter the PIN for the admin account and then click Log in. It’s possible some login items stop your Mac from successfully booting up, and this method requires you to bypass the login process to avoid the login items or misbehaving software. How to do that? Check the instructions below:

  1. Start up your Mac.
  2. On the Login page, enter the admin account and password. Remember DON’T click on Log in immediately.
  3. Press and hold the Shift key to stop frozen apps from launching.
  4. Click on the Login button now.

2. Boot your Mac into Safe mode

You can also boot into Safe mode. By booting in safe mode, Apple’s system itself checks if things are wrong. So sometimes booting in safe mode will help for the big picture. You may also be able to start up normally afterwards.

Shut down your Mac and restart it while holding down the Shift key. It may take a while for the system to boot into safe mode, so be patient! Then you can release the key once you see the Apple logo and loading bar. Once the system has booted, try to uncheck login items in Users & Groups.

Then you can reboot in normal mode and see if it works. This can also take longer than normal, so be patient here too. If your Mac starts up normally again, congratulations! Your issue is solved now. If not, try rebooting your Mac into macOS Recovery Mode.

3. Boot into macOS Recovery Mode

Sometimes your Mac does not start and the operating system does not load, it does not immediately indicate what the problem is. But it’s possible that your startup disk is corrupted. In this case, we can solve this issue by booting into macOS Recovery mode. Here’s what you can do:

Shut down your Mac and immediately press and hold COMMAND + R keys. You will get a separate screen where you can go to “Disk Utility”.

You can of course release the COMMAND + R keys as soon as this screen pops up.

Then click on “Disk Utility” and then on your startup drive. Now you can click on “First Aid” to check and fix if there is something wrong with the hard disk. When it reports Operation successful, you are good to go. If unfortunately, this method won’t work for you, move to the next one to try.

4. Reinstall macOS

Though it sounds like a troublesome solution, many users have to reinstall macOS to solve the Mac login issue. However, reinstalling Mac OS will erase all data or settings stored previously. Therefore, you are highly advised to use data recovery software to trace back important files if you have no backup.

iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac is what we recommend since it’s the known only data recovery software fully compatible with T2-secured Macs on the market. Once the files have been settled down, you can proceed reinstalling macOS based on your own needs.

Conclusion

In addition to the above methods, there are more you can try. For example, resetting NVRAM, resetting password, or checking preferences may all work to some extent. Last but not least, never forget to back up your data regularly!
