Basic Functions Of Android Phone Settings

Do you have an Android Mobile Phone Operating System and doesn’t know the functions of the different sections or options present in its settings? Are you just swapping from other phone brands like iphone, ipad, Blackberry, Nokia etc to Android phone without knowing much on how to use the different options in the device settings? Just relax because this post is crafted for such guide.

Android Phone Settings is simply the control and set up management section that is created by phone manufactures, for different assignment on mode of operation in Android devices. It is also found in other phone brands mentioned above.

It is very necessary for you to know the functions of all sections present in your Android device settings, in order to make the best use of your device. As a newbie to Android, you must have navigated to your phone settings to customize one or two things, but at the end of the day, you ended up being confused or applying some feature you wouldn’t want to use. Some of us may even put the phone in danger due to wrong application of settings. Now, without having to bore you with much talks, read on to get the functions of each section in settings.

 Note: if you are using other mobile phone brands that is not Android, some of the sections below are as well found in such brands and function the same. So read on to get to know their works on your device.

 Uses/Functions of Android Mobile Settings
>> To go to any Android phone settings, click the Menu Button >> Tap on Phone Settings, and you will get to see the various sections used in customization. Below are the sections with uses.

FOR WIRELESS AND NETWORK SETTINGS:
We have;

>> CELLULAR DATA: This is one of the sections located in phone settings. Its function is to enable user connect to the internet for browsing. Once it is switched ON, user can then surf the net through different enabled internet applications, egs. Chrome browser, Social media apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Skype, Twitter etc.

>> DUAL SIM SETTINGS: This is where you control or customize your SIM card settings based on Voice call, data connections and messages. Some Android device has only a Single Port for SIM card while some came with dual sim port either in micro or full. So in this section of settings, you get to choose the particular sim in which you prefer for your voice call, messages and data connections, or you can set all to click to action of “Always ask”. You can as well edit sim card name and switch ON/OFF to make one Default.

>> BLUETOOTH: Enables your Android device connect to another device for file transfer or sharing. Once your device’s Bluetooth is Switched ON, and connected to another, then the both can share files like music, pictures, pdfs, videos, audio recordings, etc.


>>WLAN or Wi-Fi CONNECTION: You can choose to use this feature when you want to tap from other phone’s network data connections. This feature can only be utilized when switched ON. It has an option for scanning available public and private networks. Some apps also use this feature to get some files shared to another device. Apps like Xender, Flashshare, Ftp uses this feature to share Games and other things sharable. 

>> AIRPLANE MODE: this feature in settings, switches your phone to airplane mode once enabled and that means, no incoming or outgoing voice or video calls, no text/SMS messages, no data or network connections.  This feature makes your android phone dumb or disconnected to network connections. And it is mostly used on Airplane flight.  So utilize when needed.

>> CELLULAR NETWORK SETTINGS: Here you get access to Data roaming that enable you connect to data services when roaming. Also, in this section, you can set up the device to your Preferred network type to 2G, 3G, 4G or automatically.
 In this section, you can as well set up Access Point Names, which serves as section for setting internet configuration. You either request for automatic internet APN configuration from your network provider or you choose to setup using manual process. The settings differ by Internet service providers (ISP).

Another setting you can also get in cellular networks is NETWORK OPERATORS. Here you search and automatically choose preferred network depending on your network or service provider.


>> DATA USAGE: This section helps user of any Android device, control and monitor all background application’s data usage. In this section, you can stop any background app from consuming your MB data. The section gives you a graph of data usage and also the apps involved in sucking the data. In other to disable any background data sucking app you discovered, just click on such app and tap where you see “Restrict app background data” and such app will be restricted from using data on background.

>> TETHERING & PORTABLE HOTSPOT: Here you get to see WLAN hotspot settings, USB tethering settings, Bluetooth tethering settings and hotspot & tethering settings (with IPv4 and IPv6 Security level settings, for locking your Wi-Fi connections.)

So in other words, tethering & portable hotspot, enables your device connect or accept other internet connections just for the purpose of sharing either network connection, files and document like Games, Apps, pictures, music, pdfs, notes, videos etc through file sharing apps like Xender, Flash share. With this connection type, you can connect so many other devices like laptop pc, Tablets, Desktops, another android, and other brands of phones that has such functions.

Tethering is for wireless connection and also for USB cord. So when connected to other device with a cable USB cord, your device gets to tether. USB cable wire tethering can be used to unlock Android device when connected to PC with required unlocking tools and even to flash phones. Can also be used to share files mentioned above. And further more used in updating or upgrading Android devices if not Over the Air (OTP) update. When connected, can also be used for charging of your battery via the charging port.

>>VPN: Which stands for “Virtual Private Network” it is used for remote access to private networks. All you got to do here in order to utilize this section, is to configure or set up a new VPN profile using the working private network settings. Once it is created and successfully set up, then you can start surfing the net for free. Some third party network providers have done more in developing latest VPN apps for free browsing on all networks while some go premium. Some of the VPN apps include: tweakware, Droidvpn, psiphone handler, simpler server, etc. They keep updating the VPN for latest free browsing on all networks like MTN, Etisalat, GLo, Airtel, Ntel etc for the present 2017, and coming 2018, 201D9, 2020, 2021 years. Very soon browsing the net for free will be order of the day for all. 

FOR BASIC SETTINGS
>> DISPLAY: In this section of your phone settings, you can customize the way you want your device to display things on the screen while giving out the output of the program.  The settings under this section are as follow;

> Brightness level: This is where you can adjust the brightness of your phone. For some phones, like Gionee, the section came with two options for brightness. And the 2 options are; (Adaptive brightness: used in optimizing brightness level for available light. And Economical backlight: utilize this option for saving power just by ticking the box and it will automatically adapt to the backlight.

> Font style and Size: is the decoration of your device’s text.
> Wallpaper: Here images or already system pictures can be used for decoration of your Android device’s screen.

> Auto-rotate screen: It rotates your device’s screen to either slide left or right if you enable the option. This setting becomes so useful while watching movies or playing games that requires wide screen.

> Sleep: Keeps your Android phone screen light or backlight at rest when not in use. The option saves power consuming when not in used, just by sleeping mode. This option works depending on how you set up the time of screen sleep. So you can either set up the time for inactivity to be in seconds or minutes.

> Multi task display Style: This is where you set up how your minimized apps or files will look like when you click on minimized button. It has two styles to choose from and they are (Native and Card styles). Set up your device to whichever you prefer.

>> SOUND AND VIBRATION: This is the section for setting up your device Call & SMS ringing tone, and as well section for setting up ringing volume, Media volume, and Alarm volume.  Here, you get to activate or deactivate some options like: (Dial pad touch tones, screen lock sound, Touch sounds, Vibrate on touch sounds). Also, you can silent or put your phone on vibration through this section.

>> DO NOT DISTURB: When “Do Not Disturb” is enabled, calls and alerts that arrive when the phone is locked, will be silenced (except the apps that are allowed to disturb), and a moon icon will appear in the status bar. This service only allows Alarms, important notice, call, and SMS. To use this option, you have to set up the automatic rules based on weekend services and weeknight services.  You can as well add your own rules for your device.

>> SECURITY: This section of any android phone settings is very important and useful, if you want to set limitation to the usage of your phone by others. Any mistake done here can lead to locking of such device without having the security code or password for unlocking. So it is very important to be careful while on this section of Android settings.

In security, you get to set up whether to lock your Phone screen or SIM card. Other security settings present are; Guest mode, smart automatic lock, Unknown sources, Device administrators, Mobile anti-theft, screen pinning, Encrypt phone etc. You can as well change password, enable pattern visibility.

>> NOTIFICATION AND CONTROL CENTER MANAGEMENT: Here you get to set up notification for your device lock screen, that is privacy of application protected by lock-screen. Push application which enable or disable push message from apps. Display network speed; shows the network speed on the status bar when the feature is enabled.  Control center, you get Access in lock screen, and application access notifications.

>> APPLICATION: From here, you can configure your android apps, reset apps, and delete or uninstall apps. In the option for app configuration, you get settings like app permissions, app links etc. In advanced you get; default apps, draw over other apps, modify apps, modify system settings, and battery optimization.

>> ADVANCED SETTINGS: This section of phone setting, provide you with many options for setting up and getting some important information on how your device is handling some task. In the area of information regarding to some task being handled which are as follows; smart Gestures (which contains, pause alarm, Black screen gestures, smart vibration reminder, smart bright screen, double click wake up settings. You can get to set up suspend option, Hotknot. Get detailed information on how some system hardware are performing their operations. Hardware like (storage & USB, Memory, Manage battery settings).
For your personal settings like location, Accounts may be Google Mail, Facebook messenger, Whatsapp, Yahoo Mail with many more can be set up here if you want, just for backup purpose.

>> LANGUAGE & INPUT: This is the section where you can set up your device language to your preferred known language. The default lang. is always English because it is generally accepted by all. But you can still change it to your own test of language if you want.  In this section, you can as well set up the device’s spell checker, Personal dictionary etc.
For INPUT set ups, that is the way you communicate or give the device work/task to carry out can also be accessed in this section mobile phone settings. The things you can set up here are; Current keyboard, Google keyboard, Google Voice typing, Touchpal, Text-to-speech output and Mouse/Trackpad (Pointer speed).

>> BACKUP & RESET:  This is the area where you store and backup your Android data and as well restore when needed. Things you can backup and restore when required from your device’s files are images, apps, pdfs, phone numbers/contacts, videos, configuration settings etc. Once you switch/tick the option for automatic backup & restore, then your phone is activated for that. Another feature there is

>AmiClone; this enable you to carryout data migration from your old smartphone to your newly bought Android smartphone. Is a kind of transferring all the data you got from your old device to your new device.

>> FACTORY DATA RESET/FORMATTING SETTINGS: In case you wish to format or erase your phone data automatically with soft formatting, then factory data reset is the option for doing that. Once clicked, all the files in your phone will be deleted/cleared. So only use the section if you are ready to wipe everything from your phone.  You can as well choose to reset only your phone Network settings for browsing. To do that click on Network reset and it will be done.  

>> DATE & TIME: This is where you set up your phone date and time. You can choose to set up the date and time zone via automatic mode. Automatic mode gets time and date updated once you switch ON your Data connection. It gets the correct time and date from net and update your device automatically. You can as well set up that manually. Tick the box of 24-hour format if you wish to use that.

>> SCHEDULE POWER ON/OFF: This option is used to set up the time in which you wish to get your phone switched off and ON automatically. For me, I set up my phone schedule power on to be 7:00 AM while schedule power off is 12:00 midnight. You can set yours with your preferred time based on daily plan.

 >> ACCESSIBILITY: Get access to;
>Talk back feature: when Talkback is on, your device provides spoken feedback to help blind and low-vision users. For example, it describes what you touch, select, and activate.
>Switch Access: Lets you scan and select items using one or more switches.
>Power Button Ends Call: This feature allows you to use power button to end an incoming call or may be after answering/making call you press the power button to end the call. It works only when it is activated. To use such feature switch it on.  Another feature there is touch & hold delay.
>Color inversion and color correction: this is for screen display light.
>Printing: Connect your phone via USB to printer and get your documents printed out.

ABOUT PHONE: This is the section of your phone settings where you get to know all the information concerning your android phone brands. When you click on “About Phone” you will get to see your Android phone (Model number, system version, System updates, status, hardware information, legal information, Android version, Android security patch level, kernel version and Build number).
